Original image taken of a single Bound Herbarium recently discovered in library shelving at Kew Gardens Herbarium – 2023. The item originates from Madagascar – full authorship to be published. The item is currently being restored.
Below are two prototype herbarium sketches that use the visual language of the standard and bound Herbarium – including stitching techniques, samples, drawing and real insect specimens, with elements using archival inkjet digitally printed onto Herbarium standard issue paper. These sketches were made in response to story of how undercover agents infiltrated the global black market for cacti in the American West. Images and samples were captured and accessed from inside Kew Herbarium.
Bottom are images from Natural History Museum Bound Herbarium collection – accessed by Smith and White with Mark Carine on 4th May 2023. Images include the original bound herbarium of Hans Sloane (1660-1753). Sloane published his lavishly illustrated two-volume; Natural History of Jamaica later. Other Bound Herbarium show the inclusion of other flora and fauna within pages of herbarium of this period.
